On the heels of the launch of our new Anti-Spam guide (Click here to visit it Anti-Spam Guide) - launching 01/04/05) Here are three great (and totally free) programs to help you fight the spam in your inbox!
Spambayes - (Right Click Here to Download) Is a very effective group of anti-spam filters and programs. It works with Microsoft's Outlook, and you train it over time to filter out spam and ham (ham=email you want to get.) It's a very good and effective anti-spam program, and worth the time learning how to use it and train it. More information can be found at this link: spambayes.sourceforge.net/
Spam Assassin (Right Click Here to Download) is another good antispam product that works with Outlook. You need to read about it at the Sourceforge page: sourceforge.net/projects/saoutlook/
Abuse (Right Click Here to Download) Abuse takes a completely different tact in the spam wars. Allow Abuse to analyze a spam email, and it will attempt to send a complaint letter to the ISP where the spam originated from. Very clever - Read more at the Abuse homepage: sourceforge.net/projects/spam-abuse. T
Some quick anti-spam tips:
1. Never give your main email address out to any public location on the internet (like message boards, newsgroups, or websites that post email addresses (in the comments section, for example)
2. Don't reply to any spam that's sent to you - don't unsubscribe, really, don't even click on it. Delete all spam emails immediately.
3. Try using a free internet account that does a good job filtering out spam emails. Both Yahoo and Gmail do fairly well at this. If your account is bombed by dozens of spam emails every day - it's time to change email addresses.
4. Using a short, easy to guess email address (like John@aol.con) will get you tons of spam because spammers send out emails to all common names and places @most major email providers.
Much more anti-spam information will be at our anti-spam page - Check it out!
